[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Osteoarthritis is the progressive deterioration of articular cartilage that is seen in mammal’s joints.
Joint surfaces are normally covered by a material called articular cartilage. The cartilage layer is normally very thick and with the lubricating synovial fluid, joints move smoothly and comfortably.
Osteoarthritis is the process where articular cartilage becomes fissured and thin and results in exposing the underlying bone. When the cartilage becomes thin, the joints swell and stiffen, and become sore. Movement becomes restricted and the joint aches during and after they are used.
The process can be caused by injuries into the joint such as fractures, and with excessive use which is seen in professional athletes. Most commonly osteoarthritis develops with age and the precise cause is still poorly understood. There is a familial tendency and as such, we observe that some families develop osteoarthritis more readily than others.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern” css=”.vc_custom_1643420875734{padding-bottom: 2.5% !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;}” z_index=””][vc_column][vc_row_inner row_type=”row” type=”grid” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Our surgeons treat those with osteoarthritis to give them greater mobility and movement as well as a greater relief from pain caused by this degenerative condition.
Depending on the condition your surgeon may recommend replacing the arthritic joint or removing the damaged cartilage. If the joints are very severely damaged patients may be advised to have a procedure called arthrodesis which is when two bones on each of the joints are fused together which replaces the joint altogether.
All options will be discussed with the patient in full with their surgeon.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern” css=”.vc_custom_1643420875734{padding-bottom: 2.5% !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;}” z_index=””][vc_column][vc_row_inner row_type=”row” type=”grid” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Often a patient’s own GP will have advised around health and lifestyle choices to further prevent the painful condition of osteoarthritis.
There are a number of different types of surgery such as arthroscopy which is another name for keyhole surgery which is minimal and then there are total joint replacements which are classed as open surgery. Every condition will be assessed and treated on a case-by-case basis.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern” css=”.vc_custom_1643420984649{padding-bottom: 5% !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;}” z_index=””][vc_column][vc_row_inner row_type=”row” type=”grid” text_align=”left” css_animation=””][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]There will be some level of discomfort but remaining active is important but advice will be given by both your surgeon and your physical therapy team who will provide you with your own personal recovery program.
