Hip Arthroscopy

Hip arthroscopy, also referred to as keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery, is performed through very small incisions to evaluate and treat a variety of hip conditions. Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure in which an arthroscope is inserted into a joint. Arthroscopy is a term that comes from two Greek words, arthro-, meaning joint, and -skopein, meaning to examine.

Hip arthroscopy may be indicated for the following reasons

Surgery Information

Before the Surgery

Your surgeon will explain to you exactly what happens during the surgery and how long recovery time is and what you can expect. Your surgeon will let you know that during the surgery you will be placed on your side and your foot is then placed into a simple traction device that allows the area to create space in the hip joint.  This is done with the greatest of care and is completely pain free.

Normally your surgeon will advise that the procedure will be done as a day treatment but sometimes you may have to stay overnight depending on the individual basis.

You will be advised that a local anaesthetic will be used and placed in your hip after the operation to help with pain relief.

After the Surgery

You will be advised that a local anaesthetic will be used and placed in your hip after the operation to help with pain relief immediately after surgery. Pain relief at home can also include ice and anti-inflammatory with which your surgeon will provide information on.

Being able to walk pain free normally takes between 6 – 8 weeks.  For those who want to get back to their normal elite level of fitness this will be around 3 – 6 months.

You will work with both your surgeon initially around rehab and then from there you will most probably work with a physiotherapist who specialises in hip rehabilitation.
